Despite the state’s and country’s deteriorating financial position, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of retirees and the timely payment of their pensions.
As the state’s finances improve, the governor noted that efforts were ramping up to clear 2011 pension arrears and boost the quarterly transfer of N500 million to alleviate the backlog of pension arrears.
It was reported earlier that Pensioners in Ogun stormed the government house to demand for the payment of their long-overdue pension arrears during the week.
In reaction to the Ogun State Chapter of the Local Government Pensioners Association of Nigeria (LOGPAN) protesting over unpaid gratuities, Abiodun issued a statement in Abeokuta through his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin.
He did, however, say that the state government was unaware of any N3.9 billion pension fund set up by the protesting retirees to pay local council pensioners in the state.
“There is no favoritism in the payment of pension in the state,” Abiodun added, refuting the accusation that disbursement was done to favour some persons at the expense of others. There is a method that must be followed.”
He said a team will be dispatched to the pension office to investigate why 2014 pensioners received more money from the quarterly N500 million payout than others, as the pensioners claimed.
