The Federal Government is set to commence the review of the pension and severance package of retired police officers, as announced by President Bola Tinubu during the launch of the Nigeria Police Veterans‘ Foundation in Abuja.
Represented by the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, President Tinubu stated, “As the President of our dear country, I will not only give my full support to the Veterans Foundation, but will also ensure that such areas like improving the pension and severance package of retired Police officers are immediately reviewed to reflect the enormity of their contributions and commitment to our country.”
Furthermore, Tinubu indicated that administrative processes towards the issuance of an Executive Order will be initiated to designate a day, possibly March 5th (the launch date of the Veterans’ Foundation) or April 1st (the date of amalgamation of police forces), as National Police and Veterans’ Day in Nigeria.
Dr. Solomon Arase, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), also emphasized the significance of the launch of the Police Veterans’ Foundation. He highlighted the need to recognize the sacrifices made by police officers and address the challenges they face post-service.
Arase mentioned the establishment of the Retired Officers’ Consultative Forum, which aims to address contemporary challenges within the Nigeria Police Force and improve the welfare of retired officers. The Police Veterans’ Foundation emerged from this initiative to provide support and solidarity to retired officers, addressing their pressing needs and reinforcing the legacy of service, loyalty, and commitment within the Nigeria Police Force.
