In a momentous occasion hailed as unprecedented in the state, Governor Oyebanji fulfilled a campaign promise by presenting cheques worth a total of N915 million in gratuities to 289 retirees from the State, local government, and primary schools. The event, held at the Governor’s Office, Ado-Ekiti, showcased the administration’s commitment to shared prosperity and ensuring a dignified life for pensioners after their dedicated service to the state.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by retirees due to unfortunate delays in receiving their gratuity benefits, Governor Oyebanji reassured the senior citizens that his government remains steadfast in ending the era of endless waiting for gratuity payments. He highlighted that since assuming office in October 2022, over N1.2 billion has been disbursed as gratuity to both State and Local Government retirees, with monthly pension payments being consistently regular.
The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries including Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Habibat Adubiaro, members of the State Executive Council, Head of Service Barr. Bamidele Agbede, and prominent labor leaders. Addressing the beneficiaries, the Governor encouraged them to utilize the funds wisely, prioritizing their health and improving their overall quality of life.
Governor Oyebanji expressed his fulfillment in delivering on one of his election promises, stating, “I am committed to all programs and policies that will enhance the quality of life, especially for our pensioners who dedicated their youthful years to the service of our dear State.” He reiterated his determination to make retirement a phase filled with happiness and assured the retirees that their welfare remains a top priority for his administration.
The Governor praised the Pension Transitional Arrangement Department (PTAD) at both the state and local government levels for their diligence and transparency in processing the gratuity payments. He specifically commended their policy of prioritizing first-to-retire, first-to-be-paid and urged them to sustain this approach.
During the event, the Head of Service, Barrister Bamidele Agbede, expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for fulfilling his promise to the retirees, highlighting the Governor’s genuine intent and commitment to restoring dignity to the elderly citizens who dedicated their active years to the growth and development of the State.
Various labor leaders, including the State Chairmen of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and Joint Negotiating Council, commended the Governor for prioritizing the welfare of workers in the state. They pledged their continued support to the administration and praised the notable achievements made in just 200 days in office, particularly in the welfare of the elderly.
In response, Mrs. Beatrice Ogunjemilua and Mr. Alonge Michael Alabi, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Governor for fulfilling his promises made during the election campaign. They offered prayers for his long life and wisdom in steering the affairs of the state towards greater heights.
The event concluded with a special prayer for the Governor’s successful tenure and the prosperity of the state during his leadership.
