Pensioners in Osun State took to the streets in Osogbo on Tuesday to organize a peaceful protest against the state government’s failure to pay pension arrears.

Before taking to the streets and singing solidarity songs, the placard-carrying retirees met in Nelson Mandela Freedom Park.

“Our welfare and well-being are very important to us, pay us our money,” one of the posters reads, while another reads, “Stop killing us indirectly — please pay us.”

Mr. Gbenga Oyadare, the pensioners’ leader, told journalists that they took to the streets to refute rumors that the government had released funds to settle their pension arrears.

Oyadare stated that his colleagues had not yet received their monthly stipends and that any information contradicting their position should be considered false.

The state government, he believes, should pay the pensions and arrears.

The state government was urged by Oyadare to save the pensioners by ensuring that their demands were addressed, allowing them to meet their urgent requirements and live a better life.

Recall that the state government had promised to release over N700 million to settle pension arrears as earlier reported by PensionTalk.

In the meantime, the state government has urged protesting retirees to be patient.

Mrs. Funke Egbemode, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, said the government was doing everything it could to evaluate the protestors’ requests, which she said had been tabled at a cabinet meeting around ten days ago.

Egbemode said that instead of taking to the streets, senior persons should demonstrate patience and understanding with the administration.

According to the commissioner, the government has never missed a payment of pensions or gratuities, including those of contributory pensioners, since 2018, and is working to clear the backlog it inherited.
