Participants in a one-day public hearing held by the Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday approved the move to repeal the law governing the distribution of pensions and other benefits to former governors and deputies.
The proposed law is titled “A Bill to Repeal the Law to Provide for Payment of Pensions and Other Fringe Benefits to Public Office Holders in Lagos State and for Other Connected Purposes,” according to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN).
According to the law, all previous governors or their deputies are entitled to a pension equal to the present governor’s or deputy governor’s yearly basic pay and other benefits as stipulated by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
Former governors and deputy governors are entitled to residential residences in any area in the state, according to the present pension law for ex-governors and their deputies. The law also included three automobiles for a past governor and an additional pilot and two backup cars that would be updated every three years.
In addition, the deputy governor would be entitled to two cars, one for piloting and the other for backup, which would be updated every three years. They are both entitled to furniture, pensionable domestic employees, and free medical treatment for themselves and their immediate family.
A former governor was entitled to two SSS details and one female officer in terms of security, but the deputy governor was only entitled to one.
There were also provisions for eight police officers, four each, for home and personal protection for a former governor and two police officers, one each, for home and personal protection for a former deputy governor, as well as pensionable drivers.
