The Military Pensions Board (MPB) has initiated the electronic verification of retired military personnel in Nigeria, aiming to address security risks associated with travel and financial burdens for pensioners residing both within and outside the country.

According to Air Vice Marshal IP Irhumheson, Chairman of the Pensions Board, the decision to transition to electronic verification is driven by challenges such as the advanced age of pensioners and the high cost of transportation. The electronic verification system, known as the “Military Pensions Board Electronic Verification Management System,” is designed to enable pensioners to undergo verification remotely using a mobile device.

The system guides pensioners through various verification stages, including face verification and biodata confirmation, ultimately generating a reference number as proof of completion. Pensioners can download the verification application from the Google Play Store or the AppStore, input their bank and account details, and follow the instructions provided.

A pilot test of the electronic verification application involving 9,600 pensioners drawn from each state in Nigeria will take place from February 19 to March 1, 2024. Selected pensioners will receive notifications through veterans’ associations and will be able to carry out verification without visiting the Board’s offices.

AVM Irhumheson emphasized that the electronic verification solution prioritizes accuracy, user-friendliness, and convenience, leveraging technology to improve the pensioner experience. The initiative aims to eliminate the need for physical verification exercises while ensuring timely and accurate pension payments.

He assured pensioners and Next-of-Kin of deceased personnel that the Military Pensions Board remains committed to their welfare, working to ensure that entitlements are disbursed promptly. The transition to electronic verification marks a departure from the previous system of physical verification, reflecting the Board’s commitment to adapt to present realities and enhance service delivery.
