In a recent statement, Chioma Ejikeme, the Executive Secretary of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, revealed that the organization has embarked on initiatives to actualize the harmonization of pensions for all federal retirees, with a particular focus on those covered by the Defined Benefit Scheme.
During a meeting with a delegation from the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria at her Abuja office, Dr. Ejikeme emphasized her commitment to the welfare of pensioners. She pledged to explore avenues for increasing pensions, expressing her dedication to ensuring that retirees receive the support they deserve.
Furthermore, Ejikeme shared that PTAD has submitted its payroll to the Ministry of Humanitarian Services and Poverty Alleviation for the disbursement of palliatives to retirees affected by the fuel subsidy removal scheme of the federal government. She expressed her intention to meet with the Minister of Humanitarian Services and Poverty Alleviation to facilitate the seamless distribution of palliatives to pensioners.
Addressing the issue of pension harmonization, the PTAD boss disclosed her agreement with the Salaries and Wages Commission to revive a memorandum previously sent to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation during the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. The memo aims at harmonizing pensions, and Ejikeme pledged to pursue its approval by the government, recognizing its significance.
“While the harmonization process is underway, please bear with us. I will keep you informed of the outcome,” assured Ejikeme. She also conveyed optimism about an increment in pensions next year when the scheduled upward review is due. Additionally, she encouraged pensioners to remain hopeful for a potential increase in the general minimum wage for public workers, anticipating consequential adjustments in pensions as a result.
The PTAD Executive Secretary emphasized the Directorate’s mission to ensure the well-being of Nigerian defined benefit pensioners and expressed a commitment to building on the progress made over the past decade.
