Some former soldiers protested at the Abuja headquarters of the Ministry of Finance, demanding the payment of their pension arrears.
The Coalition for Concerned Veterans, which represents retired soldiers, claims that the government owes them 24 months of the legislated minimum pay for military veterans, as well as debarment allowance and other benefits.
Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, the group’s head, said the demonstration was sparked by the unfathomable hardship and blatant neglect of members by the authorities.
He bemoaned the fact that, despite their best efforts to keep the country unified, peaceful, and free, they are nevertheless subjected to such treatment.
Durowaiye-Herberts pledged that the protest would go on until their demands were granted.
