Retirees under the auspices of Contributory Pensioners in Osun State stormed Osogbo, the state capital, on Friday to protest an unpaid five-year pension.

The pensioners claimed that the state government, led by Rauf Aregbesola as governor, withheld them their benefits for five years. The retirees converged on the front of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters via the newly erected Nigerian Correctional Service, Osun State Headquarters, which Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior, was due to commission.

Protesters carried placards with various inscriptions. Some of the inscriptions read, “Aregbesola, not a celebrated hero,” “Since 2016, Contributory Pension not remitted,” “Aregbesola, where is the N60 billion contributed by pensioners?” “Osun State Government pay us our bonds,” “Aregbesola mismanaged tranche 1,2,3,4 of Paris Club loan,” and many others.

The head of the group, Comrade Gbenga Oyadare, told reporters, “the aim of protesting is to make our hardship known in relation to what the immediate past governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has done to us.” We have been waiting for our entitlement for the past five years and have yet to be paid.
