Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has made significant commitments to improve the welfare of pensioners in the state, highlighting his administration’s dedication to ensuring their financial security and well-being while announcing plans to disburse N200 million monthly gratuities to pensioners in the state and to review pensions in line with current economic realities. He made this assurance while disbursing over N500 million in gratuity cheques to 152 pensioners in Ado-Ekiti.
Governor Oyebanji expressed disapproval of the traditional method of gathering elderly people in a hall for the purpose of disbursing gratuity cheques, directing that the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) office should ensure monthly disbursement of gratuity henceforth.
He disclosed that his administration had initiated efforts to defray over N40 billion owed to pensioners and approved N100 million each for both state and local government retirees to be disbursed every month.
The governor emphasized that the infrastructure development program of his administration would not hinder his welfare agenda, as both initiatives would be pursued simultaneously to benefit the people of Ekiti State. He highlighted the importance of being futuristic in addressing the needs of the populace.
Governor Oyebanji also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support to the state, acknowledging his leadership and courage in navigating Nigeria’s challenges.
Various stakeholders, including representatives from the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Nigeria Labour Congress, and Trade Union Congress, commended the governor’s efforts at improving the welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.
The event was attended by dignitaries including the Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service, members of the state executive council, and body of Permanent Secretaries.
