The National Assembly has rejected a bill that seeks to grant life pensions to National Assembly presiding officials. The Bill was titled “Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide Pension for Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, and for Related Matters”
Both chambers of the National Assembly rejected the Bill during the voting process on Tuesday.
To scale through, it required the support or vote of two-thirds of the Senators. The bill was likewise defeated in the House of Representatives.
A total of 190 legislators voted against the bill, with 162 voting in favor, falling short of the 240 votes needed to pass it.
Recall that PensionTalk had reported earlier that the Lawmakers were proposing life pension for presiding officers in the ongoing amendments of the 1999 Constitution.
