The Lagos State council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has charged the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to ensure the implementation and payment of arrears of consequential pension increases approved by President Muhammadu Buhari recently. This is despite their appeal to the state government for assistance in constructing a suitable office building.
The chairman of the NUP in Lagos State, Alexander Oluremi Johnson, who was re-elected for a second term, said the state council had not been able to put any infrastructure in place due to the union’s lean purse as a result of the state being the first to embrace the Contributory Pension Scheme, though he said the state government had been able to do so.
“However, the union’s agitation for pension increases and payment of gratuities continues,” he said. We are pleased to inform this august house that the union’s request for the implementation and payment of arrears of consequential pension increases resulting from the 2019 wage increase has been presented to the state government.”
“I am highly elated and I thank God because he is the one who gives promotion and my work has not been in vain,” Johnson said, reiterating his commitment to work for the betterment of the retirees. They convinced me that I deserved a second term and that they should expect more from me.”
According to him, a good leader does not make decisions on his own; rather, he accepts the majority’s decision.
Elder Ayo Kumapayi, Vice-President of NU, South-West, praised the delegates for their peaceful behavior and advised the exco to keep up the good work.
“They’ve been hard at work and have accomplished a lot, but I’d advise them to work toward having their own state headquarters because they’re the only ones in the South-West without one. He said, “We appeal to the state government to assist them in this regard.”
